A lone skeleton turns its head. Surely, something was there a moment ago? Perhaps a mistake.
A mission needs to be complete. Wreak havoc, cause chaos, and pave the way for the Lich Queen to march straight for Monarch City. But in the blink of an eye, the skeleton is nothing more than a pile of useless bones.
Vitalia sheathes her swords and moves on to the next target, skulking through the dark.
She’s had a hard life to get to this point, to make sure that she and her sister remained fed and housed. Now, with the threat of everyone’s lives on the line, her skills will be utilized… to stop none other than her very own sister: Dianara. The Lich Queen.
Today is our rogue Vitalia, an elf from Angel-Tear Falls who did what she had to do to keep her family well and safe. Even if it meant being an assassin for a high-paying lord.
Using the Shadows
Now you’ve seen the little moon icon throughout these panels and had them referred to as Darkness. But no one amasses darkness out of the core game quite like Vitalia. Whenever a waning moon is represented, usually one is gaining or losing one Darkness. These are cards from the Darkness resource deck, and they are added to your heap to be calculated at the end of your turn to increase the Darkness Tracker.
Most heroes only gain these resource cards after they’ve exhausted their deck, including Vitalia. But, of course, our lovable rogue can gain darkness in two additional ways.
Vitalia’s Abilities
Become Smoke
Vitalia can Become Smoke to gain darkness and avoid damage dealt. She can skulk out of the way of those dangerous minions and bosses.
Sneak Attack
Where Vitalia really shines is her Sneak Attack. When she makes an attack, she can add one die to any unoccupied sneak attack die space with a maximum of six. Any number of those die can be used in any attack - yes, even against bosses.
This means that, should those dice hit, Vitalia has the potential to do any number of dice she has in her hand against a boss and her sneak attack dice. She can really pack a huge punch! But that’s only if you’re lucky enough.
Dance Through Shadows
Or, she can gain darkness to teleport to any tan location, which only makes sense. Her home turf is a tan location, after all. She knows them all too well.
Darkness Costs
So, yes, Vitalia has the potential to cut a boss’s health in half… If you’re lucky. But not without the potential cost of a ton of darkness. Her highest ever darkness generated from one round during playtesting was more than 10. That’s on top of her cards and everyone else’s heaps and darkness! One high impact round of play just might make your next Dawn an absolute nightmare.
Oh, and did I mention that her cards also allow you to gain darkness for even cooler moves?
You can gain up to 4 sneak attack dice right away with this one, but that’s four more darkness for you to deal with next turn. Do you think you can find the balance?
Vitalia, Darkness, and Dianara
Vitalia is a prime example of a hero that seems simple until you get into the weeds with her. Yes, her actions are straight forward, but one wrong move could spell the end of the game for you and your friends. Careful with that Darkness! She’s got plenty of ways for you to gain it as you slink your way through the back alleys and the shadows.
And all that is to say nothing of her as a character. We’ve teased it with the above, but that’s right. You read correctly. Vitalia’s sister is none other than Dianara the Lich Queen herself!
Dianara was tempted away from light magic during their hard years together in the rough city nestled within Angel-Tear Falls. Vitalia now has to wrestle with the guilt of both not keeping her sister safe, and now having to bring her down with her very own blade to keep everyone else safe instead. Will she be able to overcome the love for her sister to ensure that the realm is protected?! Only you can make that decision in your games.
We’ve got so much more coming for you! Next time, we’ll take a look at the deadly, the unnerving Dianara the Lich Queen. Yes, the story of the sisters continues!
