There's also the six character booklets as well. The Freedom Five and Unity will have gone through some character changes since then(since a decent amount of time has passed in-universe), so the Starter kit is a good way to get a look at the characters in their 'prime' fully active super team forms. Not to mention all the other characters and villains you come across in the adventure itself.
These booklets and the six-part adventure make up a very good portion of the value of the Starter kit, so I'd say it's definitly worth picking up even if you already plan on getting the core book.
The majority of major named NPCs are NOT statted in the Starter Kit...
Effects/interaction but no stats: Visionary, Argent Adept, Fanaric, Miss Information, Anubis, Haka, Tempest
Full NPC stats: Baron Blade, Proleteriat,
The adventure is good - worth the $20... but not as a bestiary/villain archive. Id does, however, show that it's quite possible to have interactions with mechanics, but without full up stats...
So, as a non-RPer, I'm still a bit shocked about the price of all of this. People seem more than willing to plop down $59+ for what, in my mind, is just a book. Are all RP systems similarly priced? Why does this book cost more than most board games, which have boards, cards, minis, dice, cubes, tokens, etc.? My questions are out of geniune curiosity, since it's just such a foreign idea to me. I can buy novels that have plenty of thought, time, effort, rewrites, world-building, and more put in to them for $10.
Many games in large single volume format are $60 or even $70 - especially if licensed - so $50 is a decent price.
For comparison on the extreme end... There's a core rulebook with gewgahs not needed but useful for play, that comes in at £200 or $261 on their website, and the corebook alone is £60, or $79. Note that neither includes the Iconic Characters (not the playtest/living-campaign ones, nor any of the shows' iconics) - those are extra.
FFG Star Wars has 3 $70 corebooks. Each is fully playable alone, but many options are only in one corebook.
So, a $50 core book is not outside the reasonable range. $35 is pretty low.
Why? high layout quality expected, lots of editing skills required, long development times, low print runs. (Most "successful" RPGs runs are in the low thousands.) based upon other RPG's I've followed, GTG is likely to need 2,000-3,000 units for the KS; print runs start to drop significantly at 4,000 units; often further again at 10,000 units
Plus, most RPG core rules are full letter or A4 size, and often hardcover, usually glossy and 4-color offset. Shipping is heavy.
Settlers of Catan is just a hair over 2 pounds mass, and around 12 fit in a box. FFG's Star Wars cores are about 3.8 pounds each, and 20+ fit in that same box. RPGs limit by mass per shipping box, boardgames usually by volume per box.
Fortunately, GTG seems to be fond of Bits-n-Mortar approach: buy the core direct from them or at retail, and it comes with the PDFs. (they aren't the only ones, either.) I don't know if GTG enforces the other part: Buy online or used, and you don't get the PDF with it.

No, you don't get a full stat block for each and every known face you come across(which I never said you did). I was just saying you come across many of them, which if you are a fan of SotM, you may want to see.

The Summary of the Slaughterhouse 6 interlude on the Wiki indicates that there were ‘4’ Glamours in the Multiverse era and a 5th in the tactics (Vertex) timeline (which was Miss Information). Based on that, presumably it’s still Aislen Allen?
No real surprises for the corebook, as far as I can see. We've already gotten a glimpse of Myriad; not-Cthulhu seems to be the new kid on the block. I'm guessing Gloomweaver is still lurking about for a forthcoming occult/horror supplement.

No he died he wasn't a god he was just a human who obtained supernatural powers and lost his humanity.
When the hell did he possess anyone I only knew he died cuz Lifeline and Harpy kicked his ass.
Again from the quicknotes:
Quote:
Lifeline plus most of Dark Watch (Harpy and Nightmist are busy elsewhere) is the definitive fight that takes place in a graveyard. Lifeline is a blood mage and so this doesn't go well for GloomWeaver at all, being a creature of blood magic. Lifeline destroys the body with little trouble. However, there's still plenty of power involved in there that's now freed up. GloomWeaver uses that power to occupy all of the corpses in the graveyard and bursts up as a giant "rotting god". More heroes show up, everybody's taking chunks out of the body, but Gloomy can just grab more bodies, eat them, and regenerate. This is a really gross fight that crosses over into several issues.
Doctor Medico, post Void Guard upgrade, spends the fight absorbing the power animating GloomWeaver into his OblivAeon Shard, eventually taking in all of GloomWeaver's essence, imprisoning him - he's no longer an actor capable of influencing events.
Not Cthulu just cuz it's called Thulish it's a direct parody of cthulu? It doesn't even vaguely resemble the thing it looks more like a Mi-go. If any Lovecraft homage thing has tentacles it's automatically a Cthulu ripoff. Frankly Howard himself always called his setting Azatoth Chronicles. I wonder how he'd feel if everyone felt his work revolved around an Elder God he rarely used.
Lovecraft would most likely be shocked to the point of risking an actual stroke, if he'd somehow learned how culturally relevant he's become today, considering his utter obscurity in his own time. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't complain!
...granted there's probably a lot of *other* stuff about today's society that old Howard *would* complain about bitterly, buuuuut let's not go there!

I haven't watched the video at the end of that update yet, but hopefully it answers most character creation questions folks have been having. maybe we'll even get a peek at the procedure that let's folks switch between different forms, like Bunker?
I saw the video and Dave walked two people through the step-by-step process of creating their own characters with the guided method, and also clarified at some point that the constructed method is literally just the guided method without the dice-rolling, which I already suspected. It's as in-depth as they possibly could've gone into character creation without just straight-up giving us the rules, which I'm now even more excited for!

There's an archetype called "Modular" that covers heroes like Bunker and Muerto. It's... complicated. But the text under Modular walks you through the whole thing step-by-step.

Ah. I can't wait to give it a read. :)
Gonna have to... the wait is... trying.... no, not right...
With A little over a week left on the campaign, where does everyone think we're gonna end up with funding ammount?
The amount has steadily been going up, so I think the current streatch goal(Sentinels of Freedom Prelude One-shot) is very likely. And with the '48 hour wave' yet to come, I think we have a good shot to get to the Dark Watch Source book. Depending on what comes after that though, I'm not sure how much farther we'll go. Has to be something REALLY good to get that final push to 350K.
I'm a big proponent of providing form-fillable character sheets for rpgs in general, though in this case, it makes me question the worth of providing a pad of 100 sheets.
I mean, I can go to my work-printer right now and print a whole ream of character sheets for nothing. Is having a pad of sheets really worth the shipping/logistical cost associated with them, when the same content is available print-on-demand for free?
Honestly I don't mind the pad. Some people just don't have free access to a printer(Most of my friends and playgroup included, and I have to be careful about not being too obvious when I print things at work), so a pad like that would be a very neat thing in my situation.
I don't know the logistics of it but I'm fairly certain after all they learned from the OblivAeon KS, GTG isn't going to do anything that they can forsee will turn into a logistic/shipping nightmare for them.
I usually use digital character sheets to handle the calculations that are often needed, but SCRPG doesn't really have those. :-) So when we play, we'll likely use the pads for simplicity.

*nods* I can see the utility of them, don't get me wrong. It just seems like a lot of shipping weight and expense for something that's being given away for free.

The GM Kit is $40. How is that "being given away for free"?
I think they mean that the marginal cost of the pad of sheets being added to the GM Kit is probably pretty small. Something like that is probably relatively cheap, especially compared to special-printed stuff like the 4-fold screen and the dry-erase cards.
*nods* I can see the utility of them, don't get me wrong. It just seems like a lot of shipping weight and expense for something that's being given away for free.
The GM Kit is $40. How is that "being given away for free"?
As in, the very same sheets are available as a PDF and can be printed out at your leisure for relatively free.
Why would I want to pay for those sheets as part of a $40 GM kit, when I can already print off as many as I'd want, at minimal expense? Fully realizing, of course, that there are other items in the GMs kit that may make it worth the $40 price tag.
Lots of people don't have access to "relatively free" printing. I know tons of people who don't own printers, or only own black and white printers but like fully colored game materials.
I also know many people who refuse to steal resources from their employers.
You are making a lot of assumptions about what resources people have access to and what people value.
That's nice; I know lots of people *with* printers. Regardless of whether you do or not, the pad represents a charge for something that's effectively being given away of free. If it's something you want to pay for, more power to you. I just think it seems like adding the pads to the GM Kit adds a degree of cost on GtG's end for something that they're simultaneously providing for free.
Also, you can drop the subtle accusations of "stealing resources" from my employer; that's an assumption you're making all your own, quite incorrectly.

Okay, that makes sense. Definitely getting my wires crossed on who's who.
I'm just here taking about what powers each bad guy I wanna use has. Also surprised to see Kismet running around.
They mentioned she would be part of that team in her episode of the Letters Page (granted that was episode 7) and the summary is on the wiki.

Is it possible that "Not Cuthulu" from the unlocked adventure book is the thing bound inside of Atlantis?
The mountain watches the freedom of the sea and cries. The sea looks at the stability of the mountain and sighs.
Oh wow, that would make complete sense! Especially as it seems important enough to have a six-issue arc all about fighting it.
