Announcing: The End of the Multiverse!

Christopher's picture

Greetings, Sentinels fans!

As I mentioned on Wednesday, we have lots of exciting things happening this year. So, it’s only appropriate that we kick this process off by announcing the final Sentinels of the Multiverse expansion. So, without further ado, we are very proud to announce:

Sentinels of the Multiverse: OblivAeon

So many stories from the Multiverse lead up to this point, and Sentinels of the Multiverse: OblivAeon is the culmination of all these stories. There are hints that point to OblivAeon throughout the Multiverse. We’ve been planning this ending point for over five years now, so we’re very excited to get to share it with all of you.

On Tuesday, February 9th, we will be launching a Kickstarter for Sentinels of the Multiverse: OblivAeon. That Kickstarter will also include other amazing things, such as:

  • Ultimate Hero Variant Pack - all of the hero promo cards EVER with all new art!

  • Limited Edition 5th Anniversary Foil Variant Pack - all of the hero promo cards ever with all new art in FOIL!

  • The Ultimate Collector’s Case - a really slick storage solution that will hold ALL of the Sentinels of the Multiverse products!

Now, let’s pause for a moment here and talk about Kickstarter. Previously, we announced that we were moving away from Kickstarter for Sentinels of the Multiverse products. And this was true. However, as we worked on developing OblivAeon, a few things occurred to us. First, a preorder works best when it focuses on one or two flagship games, but we wanted to include a number of products that have been long-promised and long-anticipated, and we didn't want them to get lost in the shuffle in a preorder. Second, we had some technical difficulties with Villains of the Multiverse preorders on our website that resulted in a lot more work for us on the shipping end and a few international shipping problems, and using Kickstarter helps us neatly avoid these issues. Finally, writing up the “Five Years of Sentinels” retrospective that I posted a couple days ago really reminded us all just how much Kickstarter and the Kickstarter Community - including all of you - was instrumental in the success of the game. Returning to that platform for the end of the Multiverse seemed highly appropriate.

So! In over a week, Sentinels of the Multiverse will be returning to Kickstarter for one final hurrah! You can look forward to all the great things you’ve come to expect from a Sentinels Kickstarter, including fantastic products, lots of story and art updates, and - of course - LOTS of exciting free stretch goals.

In just under an hour, Adam will be doing a livestream of his screen as he does some exciting arts. While he’s doing that, I’ll be in the chat room there, willing to answer questions about OblivAeon, Kickstarter, and more! I hope to see you there!

Please join us on Kickstarter on Tuesday, February 9th to help us end the Multiverse even better than we started it.

Can't wait for the Kickstarter! Looks like an exciting end to the card game!

For the box, can you make sure that the sleeved cards can fit in.  I have made a massive box for several games, but would love for all of it to fit nicely sleeved in a just sentienels box.

Christopher's picture

Don't worry! The Ultimate Collector's Case will definitely work with most sleeves!

arenson9's picture

I've got big sleeves and I can not lie. They have like have a cm extra on top and are too wide for the boxes.

McBehrer's picture

If there is some way to make this possible, could you maybe release PLASTIC versions of the character dividers, instead of the paper ones we have now? Like in Smash-Up's Big Geeky Box? That one component upgrade would be REALLY valuable to me. my dividers are already splitting and tearing from the constant use.

Hey Chris! One problem i have had with the current boxes is that there is not enough length to fit premium sleeves (such as ffg sleeves) due to the extra mm at the top. Will the box be able to accomodate these sleeves? Maybe an addon option for a larger box? Tyvm.

This has been announced brilliantly.  Building up excitement over days with the puzzles and clues leading up to this reveal was the perfect way to go.  I wouldn't say I'm happy when I think about the end of SotM, but stories have beginnings and endings, unless they drag out so long as to eventually lose touch with what they were supposed to be, what they could have been.  This is a great choice and I look forward to the future.

Kickstarter is an interesting choice.  I hope it does help to avoid some of the delays mentioned.  The previous preorder, for Villains and Broken City, went up before Europe had received their goods from the Wrath of the Cosmos preorder.  This announcement also comes before many in Europe (including myself) have received our copies of Villains.  (And, of course, Broken City is delayed even more, albeit to make it better.)  But I honestly find myself not minding because of the way excitement has been building through these puzzles.  I guess it's because these days of puzzles have underlined just have much passion and creativity GtG puts into their products.  Although it can be frustrating at times to see promises not met, at the end of the day I would rather wait for GtG's games than get any other company's games on time.

Christopher's picture

We're working with FedEx every day to get those boxes to their destinations! We sent them out weeks ago, and the hold ups have been entirely out of our hands, but I assure you - we're as frustrated by it as all of you. We need you fine folks out there to be saving the Multiverse!

Estelindis's picture

Of course I understand that the hold-ups have been out of your hands since products shipped.  Based on the timeline you had for the Villains & Broken City pre-order, I would have expected Villains to be sent out earlier in the year (as it seemed like there'd be a gap between the two products - at least enough of one to justify paying for two shipping waves - and it was said that both of them would be in our hands by the end of 2015).  However, I have faith that GtG takes all the time it needs to make its products as good as they can be.  Better for them to be late than sub-optimal.  Plus, a company more concerned with avoiding delays than anything else wouldn't have taken the time to give us these amazing days of puzzling fun!  So let there be no worries, at least as it relates to me and people who feel the same way.

Last year, I backed a Kickstarter that got the rewards to us early.  It was Norsaga, by Meromorph Games (the fellow - and his brother - who made the unofficial Cauldron expansion for SotM).  They achieved savings in both time and money by shipping directly from China to backers.  They blog about their experience here:  They also link two other blogs that discuss the pros and cons of this method:  Perhaps this wouldn't work for GtG - or perhaps it might only work partially.  But, if you haven't already been investigated it, I think it's worth a look.

Based on one of your comments in the announcement, it looks like the architecture of Kickstarter is more helpful to you than the architecture of your webstore (even at the price of you having to pay Kickstarter a cut).  Kickstarter certainly works better for me, because, for whatever reason, your webstore won't accept any permutation of my billing address (which works fine everywhere else).  Whenever I email Jodie to make the order via her, I wish I didn't have to add to her workload.  Maybe, amid all the other crazy stuff going on, the shift to Kickstarter for a while will allow some work to upgrade your webstore.  For instance, maybe in cases like mine, when the billing address isn't accepted it could open up an interface allowing for payment via PayPal (which is the method I have to use to pay you anyway after I contact Jodie, except this way would keep the process as part of a webstore order and hopefully allow me to see orders in my GtG account).  Or maybe you could allow us to add products to previous orders (that are still waiting to be shipped) ourselves, without having to bother your staff.  Anything that makes ordering from you easier is bound to increase business.

Please pardon me for making these suggestions when you and your colleagues are the ones who know how business works.  I am sincerely trying to be helpful, even if that is not what I have actually achieved.  :)  Thanks again for all the puzzle fun and best wishes!

Yay Storage! I'm having a bear of a time pulling decks out of the current boxes, will there be a more elegant solution than my current box-bending, divider-folding, force-of-will contests?

not at all necessary, it would just be a perk=]

once more: Yay Storage!

Christopher's picture

The Ultimate Collector's Case will definitely be easier to get cards into and out of! It's a delightful product. Can't wait to show it to you.

Im so happy and sad about this announcment. Does this mean well see an end to Tactics?!

I bet we will have pleanty of years and stories from the Tactics timeline but one day that story line will end as well. We will still have the Sentinels RPG and who knows what other games will come out to continue the story. I really want them to release the comics.

Sorry we broke the website rushing to read this today.

Hehehe, February NINTH? Everyone find the clue!

Any chance of international shipping being slightly more manageable for the kickstarter than it is through the store?  Can't miss this, but also don't want to double my cost in shipping if possible...

Will the ultimate storage solution have new dividers? I'm afraid mine no longer look fabulous from overruse, and I'd love to replace them.

This all sounds great and please take my money. :)

I came in late so this'll be my first Sentinels kickstarter. <3

Christopher gave my friend and I a demo of SotM many years ago at a convention.  His passion for the game was immediately apparent and so was the fact that Sentinels was something special.

I knew the end would come eventually, I just didn't want to admit it to myself.  Hands down my personal all-time favorite and the most played game at our weekly gaming group (and will likely continue to be long after the last expansion is released).

Thank You so much >G for a sweet ride.  See you back on Kickstarter in Feb.

Ummmm so do we have to wait for the kickstarter for America's Cleverest Legacy?  That is a major tease!

Legacy and Blade... does this mean there'll be some kind of mechanic to drop a villain into play on the heroes' side, so we can Team Up to Face the Greater Threat? :D

I'd also like to take this opportunity to ask that one of the stretch goals be to fill out the WW2 hero promos, with ANZAC Haka and at least two others.  (And a Nazi Germany environment deck with a "Punch Hitler in the Face" card.)

Powerhound_2000's picture

I'm excited for this Kickstarter.

You list access to two different sets of Hero Promos, any chance we can get villain promos as well? For those of us who missed them the first time around.

Those are already available through the villain big cards set.

Febraury 9th is my 25th anniversary being married to the most amazing woman and it when the kickstarter launches.  I can't wait.  I also think that I should get something extra super special because it happens to be my wife and I's day and we both love SotM (she loves Tempest and I love Tachyon and Fanatic the most but of course we love it all).  So bring it on!!!

So sad to see Sentinels come to an end (but maybe an RPG can still be produced?). This is my favorite game, edging out D&D 5th edition. I will back this KS hard n look forward to seeing it!

seesome's picture

They are planning to to an RPG, but it probably won't be coming out until 2017.

I greatly mourn the end of Sentinels, the best board game made during my lifetime. I'll await the final expansion with dread that it will be the last, with anticipation as to the clever mechanics within, and with hope that the next Greater Than game won't regress too much towards the mean.

Thank you very much for making Sentinels.

I'm sorry I can't celebrate this final expansion.

Are the purple markings on OA's chest deliberately intended to be reminiscent of Galactus's +5 silly hat?

Ah... You announce something is going to happen in just under an hour, and the e-Mails get sent almost a day later (I received the two hous ago, but according to this, the message is from yesterday)... So the message was sent about 18 hours too late for anyone to be able to read it and join the stream. Is there going to be a reschedule because of this? Or is it simply canceled?

Estelindis's picture

I think the email would've gone out much earlier if the site hadn't gone down.  The art stream happened yesterday (it had been announced already on the forums a good while previously), but Adam said he would repeat it every week until and during the Oblivaeon Kickstarter.

MarioFanaticXV's picture

Ah, pity; I guess the first wave of e-Mails must have brought in enough viewers to crash the site before they could finish going out. A pity they couldn't do the stream live like planned. I hope a week is enough time to get things ironed out before they try it again... Can they do a short term increase of bandwidth on such short notice?

Panic Fire's picture

Hi MarioFanaticXV, if you follow >G on Twitch you will get an email from Twitch if they go live.  I try to block out time whenever possible if >G announces they will be streaming but the email when they actually go live is nice.

MarioFanaticXV's picture

I already follow them; I get their e-Mails, but too many viewers overloaded the site and it crashed.

Powerhound_2000's picture

The emails always come the next day.   You miss the chat discussion but you can watch the stream from the twitch site at worst.

MarioFanaticXV's picture

That would completely defeat the purpose of doing it, no one would be able to ask questions because no one would know about it. Besides, someone already mentioned the crash during the stream.

Powerhound_2000's picture

It doesn't defeat the purpose when this got posted before the livestream occurred and it had been announced through other sources earlier by GtG in the week.

Panic Fire's picture

I am sad that my favorite game is coming to an end but I am excited to see how everything fits together.  I love that this game tells a story and I want to see how the story ends.  But please don't let this be the end of these great characters!  More Tactics!  More comics!  The multiverse is just too good to stop the stories completely.  Thanks for five great years >G.  I can't wait to see what the future holds.

MarioFanaticXV's picture

I know what you mean; I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I'm glad they have a "conclusion", and that they're not just going to milk the idea dry until everyone hates it. On the other hand, I feel like I want more; but I think that's a good thing, as that means it didn't overstay its welcome.

darcyblue3's picture

a few questions.

1.will the unique villains from the vengeance and villains of the multiverse sets come out in standard play like freight train and Greazer? and vice versa?

2.will we in the future be able to get unique card sleeves of each of the hero/villain/environments with nice backings on them with artwork representing them? its currently not a valid choice for us to get custom card sleeves for each given the price tag is ludicrous for even 1.

3. you mention that the new box will be able to hold "everything" but will it be able to in a organised fashion so all the heroes are in one section, all villains will be in another section etc?

... and thank you for the storage solution!

I presume the art on the two variant packs is the same (the only difference is the foil)?

I wish I'd found this game sooner. It feels too soon to be ending, and this game is great!

A few comments/questions:

1) What are the chances of an alternate Skyscraper and/or Omnitron X alternative character cards?

2) Will it be possible to get foil versions of the original heroes? It would feel a bit incomplete without them.

3) Will the mini expansions still be printed afterwards?

jffdougan's picture

The answer to 1) is that in a Q&A about 18 months ago, Christopher said all the heroes will have at least 1 promo by the time the final expansion is done.

Good to know. Thanks!

Plus if you care to look over the comic covers revealed during the ARG, you will see a new version of Omnitron-X called Omnitron-U.  Pretty sure that's your promo Omni right there.

What I would personally like to see is an alternate Omnitron with a power called "Unification" that reads "Place a target with the component keyword from your hand or trash into play.  All non-character hero targets regain 2 HP."  Package it with alternate versions of all of his component cards that instead of being trashed when Omni takes 5+ in a turn to them simply being targets with 5 HP.  His incap power allows him to place an Omni-U component from outside the game into his play area.  Or Heal all non-character hero targets by 1 or heal a component hero target by 5.

But that might be a little ambitious.

I'm super-excited for this Kickstarter.

...and I promise I won't say, "I told you so," when you come out with a new edition of Sentinels in 3 or 4 years. wink

Its been an awesome run and am more than happy to support this Kickstarter as well. You guys have always delivered thank you.
