Playing the game with 1 GM + 1 player

Hey guys,

I love the lore of Sentinels, and my girlfriend and I love SotM. I've wanted to try RPGs for years and Sentinels RPG seems like a great place to start.

The problem is that none of our friends are the least bit interested in trying an RPG so it's just me and her for now.

Do you think we could make this work? Any tips on rule changes or anything at all that might help us? The plan for now is for her to play 2 heroes and play it pretty much as normal.

Thanks guys

The issue being 2 people, resulting traditionally into 1 GM and 1 Player, and thus 1 PC...

Can you make it work? Possibly. Depends upon both of your abilities... which you imply are untested

Is it something a novice can pull off? Maybe.

Is Sentinel Comics well suited to 1GM + 1 PC? No. Doable, but not well suited. Low player count (GM+ 1 or 2) have always been a problem spot in RPGs.

Several people have suggested ways to tone it down for 1p and 2p groups...

I'll suggest ones I think might work in SC...

  • Have the player play 2-3 characters
  • Make the environment every other turn, rather than every turn.
  • go into boardgame mode, and play semi-GMless.
    • let each player take half the NPCs and run them.
    • forget about hidden information and the puzzle factor in the play.

We gave it a try, and are absolutely loving it! We ended up trying it using some of Aramis' suggestions (thanks for those) and haven't found any troubles so far. We're about halfway through the starter kit, having completed the Justice Comics issue and are currently on scene 2 of the Prime Wardens one.

If anyone else finds themselves in our situation I'd definitely recommend trying it out. I GM while my girlfriend plays 3 characters and she doesn't feel overwhelmed at all with that, she's mentioned going up to 4 characters which we may try but that does feel like a lot for 1 person. I originally made the environment take a turn every other round, but have found it more fun to let the environment take a turn every round, but find a reason to not move the scene tracker forward sometimes to make up for the fewer than ideal player numbers.
